BALTIMORE: IN RECOVERY - AN AUDIO PRESENTATION

Baltimore: In Recovery, a project that began as an idea conceived at a stoplight en route to a visit with a therapist, is evolving into a new format. This iteration is a narrative audio project that explores the city of Baltimore through a unique and deeply human lens: therapy.  The project began as a stage-based play and musical concert developed during Caesar’s time with Baltimore Rock Opera Society, where she first introduced the idea of imagining Baltimore as if it were in therapy—working through its contradictions, wounds, humor, and resilience.   The concept continued to evolve through its presentation at Charm City Fringe, where it became clear that the idea extended beyond a single performance and had the potential to grow into a larger, more expansive storytelling framework.   What has emerged is not just a play, but a flexible narrative structure: a series of therapeutic encounters in which Baltimore is explored through a range of archetypes—individuals, systems, neighborhoods, and identities—each grappling with their own “maladaptive behaviors.”  Through these imagined sessions, the work examines both the city’s most visible challenges and its quieter, more intimate truths, while also engaging broader themes such as disinvestment, belonging, memory, inequity, adaptation, and healing. The current phase of the project focuses on developing Baltimore: In Recovery as an audio series, allowing for a more immersive and intimate exploration of voice, character, and sound.   This shift builds on Caesar’s earlier experience in audio storytelling, which includes recording a spoken word CD and producing an audiobook-style project featuring short stories with original music, sound effects, and voice actors. These past works inform her approach to the project’s sonic landscape, where rhythm, voice, and sound design are not simply enhancements, but central storytelling tools.  As the project evolves, significant emphasis is being placed on the development of its sonic identity, including original scoring and sound design that deepen emotional resonance and narrative texture. Early stages of development include experimental recordings and audio exploration to shape the tone, pacing, and atmosphere of the work, alongside script development and character creation.  At its core, Baltimore: In Recovery is also a response to the way Baltimore has been represented in popular culture.  While the city has often been depicted through narrow or one-dimensional narratives, this project seeks to offer a more layered, reflective, and humane portrayal—one that allows Baltimore to “look at itself” with honesty, complexity, and imagination. The long-term vision for the project includes a fully developed episodic audio series, as well as opportunities for public engagement through community listening events, artist talks, and facilitated discussions. By making the work accessible through digital platforms, the project aims to reach both local and broader audiences while centering the voices, experiences, and nuances of Baltimore itself. Ultimately, Baltimore: In Recovery is an exploration of place, identity, and collective healing—using storytelling not only to reflect a city, but to reimagine how it can be understood.
